New Cup Competition For Stars
ULTIMATE WINDOWS-sponsored Billingham Stars today confirm their participation in a revamped National Ice Hockey League (North) Cup competition, involving Moralee Division 1 rivals Solway Sharks and Blackburn Hawks as well as Laidler Division 2 outfit Widnes Wild. The new Cup is a round-robin style competition format, each side facing the other three home and away to give the Stars an additional six fixtures for the 2015-2016 season. The rules of competition do not allow for a draw - any games tied after 60 minutes will be resolved by a sudden-death overtime period followed by penalty shots as necessary. Two points will be awarded for a win and one point for an overtime or penalty shot loss. The Cup winner will be the side topping the round-robin table after all games have been played. Billingham General Manager Allen Flavell is delighted to be involved in this season's Cup competition:
"We are really pleased to be part of a competition that gives us an additional shot at some silverware this season. The format is a familiar one but the slight change in the rules that mean we cannot have a drawn game should result in some exciting hockey.
Blackburn and Solway we know plenty about of course, and these will be especially tough fixtures. Widnes are an unknown quantity but we know they are pushing hard for promotion this season and will be eager to test themselves against the 'big boys'.
We had some pretty big gaps in our schedule this season and the Cup will go some way to filling those gaps. It is crucial for our League campaign that we do not go too long between competitive games - the lads need to keep their focus all season."
